Mashup and Geoweb

Today I've attended the first day of Mashup and Geoweb cluster project organized by Sardegna Ricerche, the R&D department of Sardinia regional government.

Today' speech, hosted by Davide Carboni was focused on Google Maps APIs; in a few hours Davide clearly explained us the basic API features, from the usual "(map) Hello World" to event handling, markers, drag & drop, Ajax integration, geocoding and so on.
We also tried a very basic mashup, embedding a Flickr photo and a YouTube video into a GMap info window.

Back to my office, I demonstrated some of the features to my colleagues.

The javascript GMaps API are really clean, written in an object oriented style and easy to learn. Plus, they hide all the boring cross browser issues. The only bad side of it is that you cannot access GMaps data but just their Javascript client, which gives you little control on the informations you want to display in your site.

Wish I had more free time to explore them deeper :-)
